Running a small business in southeastern North Carolina takes grit — but it doesn’t have to mean going it alone. Whether you’re just getting started or looking to take your business to the next level, there are free resources available right in your backyard that most owners never tap into.

Here are five you should know about.

1. Free Business Advising at the Thomas Entrepreneurship HUB

You don’t need to pay a consultant to get expert eyes on your business. The Thomas Entrepreneurship HUB at UNC Pembroke offers free one-on-one business advising to entrepreneurs and small business owners across the region. Whether you need help with your business plan, marketing strategy, or financials, our advisors are here — at no cost to you.

2. The Jumpstart Program

If you have an idea but aren’t sure where to start, the HUB’s Jumpstart Program walks you through 12 milestones over five weeks to turn a raw concept into a fully vetted business plan. It’s structured, practical, and completely free.

3. SCORE Mentorship

SCORE is a national nonprofit that pairs small business owners with experienced volunteer mentors — retired executives and industry professionals who’ve been where you are. Mentorship sessions are free and available virtually or in person. Visit score.org to get matched.

4. NC Small Business Center Network

North Carolina’s Small Business Center Network (SBCN) offers free counseling, low-cost workshops, and access to business resources through community colleges across the state. If you’re in Robeson, Scotland, or Hoke County, there’s a center near you ready to help.

5. SBA Loans and Grant Resources

Funding doesn’t have to mean giving up equity. The U.S. Small Business Administration offers loan programs designed for small and growing businesses, and the HUB’s Resource Navigator can help connect you to grants and funding opportunities specific to your industry and region.
